Forming Your Bands
Up to 5 players can join. You can also play in groups of 2 players each, with a total of 10 players.
Setting the Stage (Preparations)
-
1. Ready To StreamEnsure that at least one player (recommended: at least two players) have Spotify, YouTube Music or Apple Music installed on their smartphone. Subscriptions of these services are helpful to avoid ads.
Also, make sure your smartphone is setup to automatically open your favorite streaming service. -
2. Pick Your CategoryOnly one player scans the 'Scan To Play' card. Choose 'Pick a Category' and follow the instructions on the screen. At the end of the instructions, a group QR code will appear. Every player that wants to scan QR cards (and has a music streaming app installed) needs to scan this group QR code.
-
3. Shuffle and StackMix the Year and Country cards together. Place 20 cards from the shuffled deck in the center of the table with QR codes facing up. The remaining cards can go back in the box.
-
4. Create HistoryPlace two Year cards (with the year visible) in the middle of the table to start the shared timeline.
Perform! (The Game)
-
5. Scan and ListenScan the top card of the deck and listen to the song that will be played. Do not look at the song's artist or title and flip down your phone.
-
6. Place Player cardsThe oldest player will start by putting their Player card in between the cards on the shared timeline where they think the release year of the song belongs to (see image A). When that player has finished placing the card, the player clockwise from the first player will do the same and put the Player card where they think it belongs (see image B). This continues until all players have placed their guesses.
-
7. ScoringFlip the top card of the deck to show the release year of the song. Every Player that has placed their Player card correctly, receives 1 point. After the points are given, the Year card is placed on the correct place in the shared timeline.
-
8. Next Tune, PleaseContinue the same flow with the next card from the main deck, but now the player clockwise from the starting player has to start placing their Player card. This continues until all 20 cards from the deck are gone.
What about the Country cards?
If you have scanned a Country card instead of a Year card, then different rules apply!
- In this case, one player must guess in which country the artist of the song originates from. The player whose turn it is, chooses which player has to play this Country card. This can be any player at the table, including themselves.
- If the player decides to play the Country card themselves, then the player scans the card and makes their guess known. If the player is correct, they will receive one point. If not, the player loses 1 point.
- If the player decides NOT to play the Country card themselves, then the player can first peek at the Country card to see what the correct answer is. The player can then choose which other player has to play this card. Finally, the card can be scanned and the chosen player has to make a guess. If that player is correct, they will receive one point. If not, the player loses 1 point.
Winning the Encore (Victory)
When all 20 cards are gone, you add the points together for every player. The player with the highest number of points wins the game!
Expanding the timeline
When there are 13 cards in the timeline, the youngest player must discard one card from the timeline. The timeline should not exceed 12 cards to keep it manageable.
Optional rules
Longer or shorter playtime? Depending on how long you want the game to last, you can either increase or decrease the number of cards on the main deck. We recommend a value between 15 and 25 cards.
Notes
* When we are asking for the release year of the song, we are looking for the year it was first released in any country, whether on an album or as a single.
For this game mode, it is recommended to pick Spotify Player or Apple Music (iOS only) as the streaming service option. Both options will hide the title and artist so there is no need to flip down the phone after scanning.
