FAQ (while playing)

How do I play this game?

There are 2 game modes, one for 2 to 4 teams (Standard rules) and another for 2 teams only.

Tap here to see the rules of these game modes or scan the 'Scan To Play' card in the box.

I don't want to use Spotify to play Marimic.
The song is not playing automatically after scanning.
I don't want to see the artist/title of the song after scanning.

When it comes to which streaming service to use, you have 5 options: Spotify Premium, Spotify Free, YouTube Music, Apple Music or Spotify Player (in BETA). It is however recommended that you use Spotify Premium for the best experience as they have the largest library of songs available.

To change this setting, open the menu at the top left, choose 'Settings' and then set the 'Streaming Service' option to your preferred service.

There are different requirements for each option:

Feature Spotify Premium Spotify Free Apple Music YouTube Music Spotify Player
(Android only)
Paid subscription required Yes No Yes No (but ads unless Premium) Yes
Automatically plays (iOS) Yes* Yes Yes** No /
Automatically plays (Android) Yes* Yes No Only with YouTube Premium* Yes
Hides artist and title No (3-sec countdown) Yes Yes** (iOS only) No (3-sec countdown) Yes
Plays full song Yes No (20 sec and low quality only) Yes Yes Yes

Notes:

  • * To enable autoplay on Android, set up your device to open links in Chrome.
  • * To enable autoplay on iOS, set Safari as your default browser (Settings → Apps → Chrome → Default browser app → Safari).
  • ** Requires you to enable our iOS shortcut.
  • Spotify Player (which is currently in BETA) is only available in the Marimic app (Android only).

The song is not playing automatically when using Apple Music.

This means you are likely using an iPhone with iOS 18 or above. To autoplay the song after scanning, you have to use our Marimic iOS shortcut.

First, make sure the streaming service in the Settings menu is set to 'Apple Music' and the correct storefront is chosen. Next, for Autoplay (AM), you select the 'Shortcuts' option.

The last step is to load our Marimic shortcut, tap 'Play Marimic with Apple Music' and follow the instructions. After tapping 'Add to shortcuts', you are ready to play. Scan the QR card as you normally do with your camera and the song should automatically play in Apple Music.

Some songs cannot be played in Spotify/Youtube Music/Apple Music when I scan a Marimic card.

Music streaming services have arranged different licensing agreements with the rights-holders of these songs. This means that some songs can only be played in a specific country or on a specific music service where they have the rights.

This is not something Marimic can change. We recommend to use Spotify, as they have the largest music library available for most countries in the world.

Do I need to download an app to play Marimic?

No, that's optional. You only need a smartphone or tablet with an internet connection and camera, that's it!

You need to be able to scan QR codes too, but most modern phones support QR codes. If your phone does not, you can download one of the many free QR code readers available in the Play or App store.

If you prefer to use an app, please download our Marimic app in the Google Play Store.

How many songs are there in each category?

It depends. Most main categories contain 350+ songs and there may be overlapping songs over different categories. We continuously add new songs every month to the majority of the categories to keep it fresh.

I sometimes get the same song during the same game.

Marimic contains 3700+ songs over all categories. If you are a frequent player, you might get the same song twice and this may increase while playing the same category.

If you want to reset your data and start from a clean song sheet, tap here.

When I scan the card, the Spotify player will open but does not play a song or says 'Spotify is currently offline'.

This is a known issue in the Spotify app. Try to clear the cache of the app

If that doesn't work, try to keep the Spotify app open in the background and do not close it while playing the game. We recommend using Firefox for opening links, which generally works better with Spotify or YouTube Music.

You can also try out our Marimic app in the Google Play Store .
